Absolute Pitch Trainer is software that is designed specifically to help users develop the skill of Absolute Pitch, also know as Perfect Pitch. No matter what you call it, Absolute Pitch or Perfect Pitch, the ability to recognise notes by ear is fundamental to all musicians, just as learning the alphabet is fundamental to anyone who reads and writes.

Perfect pitch, also known as absolute pitch, is the ability to recognize a musical note without any context or reference note. An example would be someone hits a random key on a piano, and a person listening without seeing the key hit, is properly able to identify the note being played. Being able to identify a note without any external help likely means a person has the rare ability of absolute pitch. Varying degrees of ability range from being able to identify individual notes in chords to the tonality of bird sonds or electronic beeps.

How rare is perfect pitch?

While not many extensive studies have been done, and there are few statistics available on absolute pitch, one concesus believes that the occurrence of individuals with absolute pitch is 1:10,000 or .01%. Another more recent study suggests ~4% of musical students possess the ability to some extent.

What's the difference between perfect pitch and relative pitch?

People who have relative pitch abilities are able to identify a note with a 'reference' note. An example would be someone who remembers the 'A' note and can work up or down the scale or shift octaves to properly identify a note being heard.

Can a person develop perfect pitch?

Some people argue that perfect pitch is genetic, while others argue that with practice, you can learn to hear notes. There is no proven biological difference between the auditory system of people who have absolute pitch and those who don't. By practicing your absolute pitch and increasing your accuracy over time, you can find out if you are able to demonstrate perfect pitch.
